MORE GENERAL TIPS AND HELP FROM

the above testers, as well as Tony Wilsdon and all sorts of helpful people on the Blades of Exile mailing list, including Blades of Exile's creator, Jeff Vogel, who personally answered a couple of my trickier questions. Also, thanks to the "Things You Never Knew Existed" catalog for the picture of the skull for Bigg Skull, and to Bill Watterson for a specific artistic inspiration.

PLAYING TIPS

The plot is important. Don't ignore it.

Some of the best treasure and spells come from purely optional quests and "dungeons". Seek them out.

The information in the journals can mean the difference between life and death. There are four journals. Make sure you find them all! There are also three other books which, while not necessary for FINISHING the game, explain what's going on and why it's so important. You should find them too.

When in doubt about the value of some information, write it down! You might never see it again.

"Islands of the Wheel" is very heavy on resource management. There are no shops where you can stock up on strong energy potions whenever you feel like it, and no alchemical ingredients (because of a personal bias of mine--I have never, ever used alchemy in any Exile game). You will find some very powerful, limited-charges items if you look hard enough, and they cannot be replaced. Use them when you have to, but not until.

Every battle in the game can be won, but may require lots of strategy.

If you're really stuck and need a hint, there is a Rich Text Format hint sheet available. It's impossible to read the answer to a question unless you select it and enlarge it, so you can't accidentally read any hints you'd rather not know about. (Questions you may be asking are in 12-point font, while the answers themselves are in unreadably tiny font.) Write me at tarl@access.digex.net for the hint sheet if you get stuck.

Oh yeah--don't lie to important NPCs! They might not get mad, but they may do something else you don't want them to do...

Enjoy,
